Tanya Kant is Associate Professor in Media and Cultural Studies (Digital Media) at the University of Sussex. She is author of Making It Personal: Algorithmic Personalization, Identity and Everyday Life (2020, Oxford University Press) and has published work on AI, ethics, digital identity practice, critical political economy of the web, personalization and broadcasting, and bots. She is co-managing editor of open access publishing platform REFRAME.
She is currently working on projects relating to generative text AI, collective harm and data profiling, and bot/ human verification systems. Her newest public engagement work focuses on (mis)uses of generative text AI in the PR and comms industries, and how such usages relate to wide questions of human authenticity in a cultural landscape increasingly dominated by AI.
She has presented at a number of conferences, industry events and festivals including the South Africa National Arts Festival, Brighton Festival, BrightonSEO, Digital Existence conference and Apps and Affect conference. She has worked with Ofcom, MIT and Full Fact on data ethics, misinformation and personalisation policy.
