Britain's state run databases will cost £34bn over next 10 years

Damian Green MP, the shadow immigration minister ... "The cost of running Britain's state run databases over the next 10 years has soared to £34bn," he said. "This is presented as being for the convenience of the citizen, when the overwhelming driver is the convenience of the state."

Green also criticised the approach to national security which places excessive emphasis on the needs of policing, and the government's identity management programme.

In the first case, he said the government is collecting an excess of information on everyone in the country because a few people are planning evil acts, and that this effectively makes suspects of the entire population. This is leading many people to feel the state is their enemy, not their ally.
