Course Overview

Introduction

The internet enables business models that would have been impossible in the old, analogue world and creates exciting new ways for businesses to reach and serve their customers. Yet the digital environment is too often presented to the creative industries as a threat, rather than an opportunity.

So much is possible, but many companies are failing to take advantage in part because they don't understand the new environment and the ways in which it allows them to do business in a different - and more open - manner. The technology sector has already embraced these new opportunities for “open” business, but the creative industries have been slow to follow suit.

This course will provide business people from the creative industries with the information, evidence and examples they need to start doing business in the digital era. It will use real-world case studies to illustrate new business models made possible by digital technologies. And it will give attendees the resources they need to apply what they have learnt to their own business.

Target market

This course is aimed at people interested in and already doing business in the 'open' environment presented by rapidly developing networked communications, but who are unsure what the risks and benefits are. This could be anyone from C-level executives to individual creatives who feel the world wide web offers them a platform to kick-start their career or strike out on their own.

It will help people of all backgrounds to get the best out of their business' assets through the use of open licenses and innovative business models in the internet environment.

The course will be modular - broken down into manageable chunks - and so flexible enough to cater for a variety of audiences, also ensuring that the material presented can be made relevant to different markets and legal jurisdictions.
