From CreativeBusiness
Welcome to the Creative Business in the Digital Era wiki, where you can find the course and teaching material for the Open Rights Group's project on open-IP business models. We're examining how people are experimenting with new ways to run businesses based on freeing up their IP, whether that is the author who gives away his book under Creative Commons licences, or companies that share their intellectual property via an API, or musicians who let you choose how much you want to pay for their music.
We are researching these new and emerging business models, both from primary and secondary sources, and have prepared course material for students and teaching material for course tutors. The course itself was given by ORG on 17, 18 and 19 March 2008, but because these materials are published under a Creative Commons licence, anyone will be able to both contribute and build upon them, localise them to their own market, and give the course to students in their own area.
The project lead for this is Suw Charman, whom you can email at suw [at] openrightsgroup dot org, with support from Michael Holloway, michael [at] openrightsgroup dot org.
We welcome anyone who wants to take part in this project and help with collaborative research to create these educational materials. If you would like to contribute, please create an account, and then you can get cracking.

The Case Studies
Here are drafts of the three case studies we did. We want to add some more material that came up during the Q&As in the seminars, and also see if there are any unanswered questions from attendees and readers, so they will evolve.
Seminar Materials
We promised we'd put the work book and other seminar materials up, and there they are:

Take part in the research
If you'd like to collaborate on this research, then there are several things you can do.
- Help out on this wiki. Simply create an account, and then start to contribute your ideas and research. Note that each Article has a related "Discussion" page, accessible by the tab at the top of the page. The main Article page should be used for collating and collaborating on research; if you have questions, you should ask those on the Discussion page. Right now, we are focusing on brainstorming the Research Areas page.
- If you see any websites or articles you think are relevant to our research, use the Del.icio.us tag 'org-cbde' (http://del.icio.us/tag/org-cbde) to bring it to our attention. Please do not send bookmarks to ORG's Del.icio.us inbox.
- Join the ORG-Discuss mailing list and talk about the issues that we're raising here. The easiest way to sign up is to use the subscription box on the sidebar of the Open Rights Group home page - http://www.openrightsgroup.org/.
If you get stuck, email Michael or Suw at the addresses above.

Preparing the course
The first thing we need to do is to break down the various areas to be covered by the course into bullet points. The Course Overview gives you an idea of what we are aiming to achieve. The Curriculum then takes a look at the areas we hope to cover. There's quite a lot of ideas there, but we need to ensure that we can deliver all of this in one day (six hours), so we can't get too enthusiastic! We also need to consider our Research Areas, and firstly list the different examples of open IP business models, with examples of people using them. Then we can narrow down the list to the most interesting ones, which we will then research.
- Course Overview - Broad introduction into what we hope to achieve with the course
- Curriculum - Identifying and clarifying the different areas of knowledge of concern for this course
- Research Areas - Listing the particular practitioners which we will study, organised according to their area (format / media) of creative production
- Research Methodology - How we will go about both our primary and secondary research
- Course Timetables - How will we deliver the course?
Promoting the course and encouraging participation
We would very much like to encourage other communities to participate in this venture, not just ORG supporters. If you know of communities of musicians, film makers, photographers, writers, business people, etc. who might be interested, please list them on our Communities page, and feel free to draw this project to their attention.
