The issue of identity management in the digital age needs careful consideration and debate. The Government thinks it already has the answer: biometric passports, ID cards and a national database. Yet there is little evidence these proposals will achieve their aims; and much to suggest the schemes will compromise individual rights, make life easier for criminals, and waste billions of tax pounds.
