Gerard: either I don't understand your objection or I addressed it (albeit flippantly). In the long run (i.e. amortized over time, space, probability, what you will), does my decision to/not to subscribe to ORG cause more/fewer drinks and nibbles to adequately supply the correspondingly larger expected attendance at these events?

If yes, then my money is being spent on free drinks and nibbles. If no, then your claim that I get my money "back" in free drinks and nibbles is disingenuous, since as the membership grows the provision of drinks and nibbles will be insufficient.

Hieronymous: where does it state that the money is being spend on parties?

The post states that the donation cost is roughly on par with a couple of pints (make that one pint in central London) and that you get, by figure of speech, that money back in a free drink and nibbles. Where does it say that these free drinks and nibbles are being paid for by your donation money?

Herewith I enclose my non-subscription to ORG. I'd like to encourage you to recover the money I'm not sending by not buying the free drink and nibbles for me at the monthly ORG event, which I can't attend.

Seriously, what kind of fundraising solicitation promises to spend your money on parties?
